Above First United of Rogers Park voices echo in song. I look up to see glass-paned windows opened to September. A woman on a phone walking down the street says “those are nice windows,” then talks on the phone, then “you don’t see windows like that very often.”
“The light reflects,” I say.
Voices echo and carry now from across Morse. In the window of the New To You! Thrift Store a vintage Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera tingles my nostalgia. The price tag says “$5 – As Is”. My camera begins to sweat, but I resist the purchase.
The alley to the east reveals a multilingual peace-on-earth mural on the side of the church. A different woman stops.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” she says.
“So much color.”
She points to enter around the corner, and says the church inside is beautiful. It is Sunday, and the Methodists are open for business.
